Steps for the popular Vietnamese Sun Bonnet
One of the two VSB designs, this one is made especially by group leader Nga’s group. A particularly time and detail intensive quilt, it is made mainly in a wall-hanging/ throw size, but is also popular in single and queen size bed quilts.
For children, it looks great in light cotton colours – bright white background with designs in pinks, blues, greens and purples.
For an adult wall-hanging or throw, we use a combination of darker cottons, satin and embroidered taffeta for an elegant look.

Firstly, the design for the girls is drawn onto the fabric and cut out. Each piece is done separately – the dress, the pants, hat, feet and hands.
The dresses, pants and hat are then roughly stitched together, before being hand-sewn onto the background fabric.

The plain fabric panels, border and frame are cut and sewn together. The fabric panels are ironed, the backing fabric and inside batting are added, and the quilting begins.

In alternate squares to the girls are quilted hearts or shells, and the border is decorated with either straight lines or a heart design quilted in.
